Step-by-Step Workflow
Phase 1: SynthID Verification
- Upload the content file to the Gemini App
- Ask:
Check this for SynthID watermarks - Record the result:
- Watermark detected — Stop here. Content is confirmed Google AI. Workflow complete.
- No watermark or Unclear — Proceed to Phase 2.
Phase 2: Visual Artifact Inspection
Inspect the content for common AI-generation artifacts:
What to look for:
- Hands and fingers — Extra fingers, fused digits, unnatural bending
- Text and signage — Garbled letters, nonsensical words, inconsistent fonts
- Shadows — Multiple light sources, shadows going different directions
- Skin textures — Overly smooth, plastic-looking, or waxy skin
- Backgrounds — Repeating patterns, warped architecture, melting objects
- Bokeh/depth — Unnatural blur patterns, inconsistent focus planes
Phase 3: Reverse Image/Video Search
- Go to Google Images or TinEye
- Upload the image (or a key frame from the video)
- Check results for:
- Exact matches — Original source found (authentic, with known origin)
- Similar images — May indicate AI variation of existing content
- No results — Could be original (human or AI) or heavily modified
Phase 4: Metadata/EXIF Analysis
- Right-click the file and check Properties (Windows) or Get Info (macOS)
- Use an EXIF viewer (ExifTool, Jeffrey's Exif Viewer, or online tools)
- Check for:
