SOP: Verify a Video with SynthID Fresh
Date: February 2026 | Estimated Time: 5-10 minutes
Purpose
Verify whether a video was created or edited by a Google AI model by checking for embedded SynthID watermarks using the Gemini App.
Prerequisites Checklist
- [ ] Personal Google account or Google Workspace account
- [ ] Latest Gemini App (web or mobile)
- [ ] Signed in to your Google account
- [ ] Video file under 100 MB
- [ ] Video duration under 90 seconds
- [ ] Daily quota not exceeded (10 video checks / 5 min total per day)
Process Flowchart
Procedure
Step 1: Prepare the Video File
Before uploading, verify:
- File size is under 100 MB — if larger, compress using a video editor or tool like HandBrake
- Duration is under 90 seconds — if longer, trim to the relevant section you want to verify
- Format is supported (MP4 and other common video formats)
Video-Specific Limits
Videos are limited to 90 seconds maximum and 100 MB maximum. Your daily quota allows 10 video checks totaling no more than 5 minutes of combined video time.
Step 2: Open the Gemini App
- Navigate to gemini.google.com on your computer, or open the Gemini app on mobile
- Ensure you are signed in to your Google account
Step 3: Upload the Video
- Click or tap the Add files button
- Select Upload from device (or Google Drive)
- Choose the video file
- Wait for the upload and processing to complete — this may take longer than images due to file size
Step 4: Ask the Verification Question
Type a verification prompt:
Was this video created by AI?Check this video for SynthID watermarks@synthid verify this video
Press Enter or tap Send.
Step 5: Interpret the Results
| Result | Meaning | Next Steps |
|---|---|---|
| SynthID watermark detected | Full video was created/edited by Google AI | Verification complete |
| Partial watermark detection | Portions of the video contain SynthID watermarks | Some sections are AI-generated, others may not be |
| No SynthID watermark detected | Not created by Google AI | May be other AI or authentic video |
| Unclear | Cannot determine | Use alternative methods |
Partial Detection
SynthID can detect watermarks in portions of a video. If only parts were AI-generated or AI-edited, the verification may return partial detection results, indicating which segments contain watermarks.
Step 6: If Results Are Unclear
- Frame-by-frame inspection — Look for visual artifacts in individual frames
- Audio track analysis — Check the audio separately if the video includes AI-generated audio
- Metadata check — Inspect video file metadata for camera data or editing software traces
- Reverse search — Extract key frames and perform reverse image searches
Best Practices
- Upload the original file — avoid re-encoding or compressing before verification
- Trim to the relevant section if the video is longer than 90 seconds
- Check audio separately if you suspect only the audio portion is AI-generated
- Monitor your daily quota — 10 checks or 5 minutes total, whichever comes first
