SOP: Set Up the Gemini App for SynthID Verification Fresh

Purpose

Set up the Google Gemini App on all platforms (computer, Android, iPhone/iPad) so you can perform SynthID verification of AI-generated content.

Prerequisites Checklist

  • [ ] A Google personal account or Google Workspace account
  • [ ] Active internet connection
  • [ ] For mobile: Latest Gemini app installed
  • [ ] For computer: Modern web browser (Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Safari)

Procedure

Step 1: Account Requirements

Personal Google Account:

  • Any standard Google account works
  • Must be 18 years or older for full features
  • Free to use — no paid subscription required for SynthID verification

Google Workspace Account:

  • Your Workspace administrator must have enabled Gemini features
  • Some features may be restricted by your organization's admin settings
  • Check with your IT department if you cannot access Gemini

Supervised Accounts

Supervised accounts (managed accounts for users under 18) have limited access to Gemini features. SynthID verification may not be available on supervised accounts.

Step 2: Install or Access the Gemini App

Computer (Web):

  1. Open your web browser
  2. Navigate to gemini.google.com
  3. Click Sign in if not already signed in
  4. Enter your Google account credentials
  5. You should see the Gemini chat interface

Android:

  1. Open the Google Play Store
  2. Search for "Gemini" by Google
  3. Tap Install (or Update if already installed)
  4. Open the app after installation
  5. Sign in with your Google account when prompted

iPhone / iPad:

  1. Open the App Store
  2. Search for "Gemini" by Google
  3. Tap Get to install (or update if already installed)
  4. Open the app
  5. Sign in with your Google account

Step 3: Verify Access

After signing in, confirm you can:

  1. See the Gemini chat input field
  2. See the Add files button (attachment/paperclip icon)
  3. Type a test message and receive a response

If you cannot access the chat interface, check:

  • Your account is signed in correctly
  • Your Workspace admin has enabled Gemini (for Workspace accounts)
  • Your device meets minimum requirements

Step 4: Enable Drive Access (Optional)

If you want to verify files stored in Google Drive:

  1. Go to myactivity.google.com
  2. Navigate to Activity controls
  3. Find Gemini Apps Activity (previously called "Keep Activity")
  4. Toggle it ON
  5. Accept the terms if prompted

Why Enable Activity?

Gemini requires Activity to be enabled to access your Google Drive files. Without it, you can still upload files from your device but cannot select files directly from Drive.

Step 5: Test SynthID Verification

Run a quick test to confirm everything works:

  1. Open the Gemini App
  2. Click/tap Add files
  3. Upload any image from your device
  4. Type: Check this image for SynthID watermarks
  5. Press Enter/Send
  6. You should receive a verification result
